Medical Definition

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It can manifest as pimples, blackheads, white heads and cysts.

Causes:

  • Hormonal changes (especially during pubert, menstraution, and pregnancy)
  • Over production of sebum (oil) by sebaceous glands
  • Clogged hair follicles due to dead skin cells
  • Bacterial infection by propionibacterium acnes
  • Diet

Sypmtoms:

  • Pimples with whiteheads or blackheads
  • Redness and inflammation around pimples
  • pustules (pus-filled pimples)
  • Cysts (deep, painful lesions)
  • Scars if not treated
